10.4 Circulation And Lymphatics Flashcards
Inner layer of blood vessel
Endothelium
Tunica intima aka
Inner layer of blood vessel (endothelium)
Tunica media aka
Middle layer (smooth muscle) with elastic lamina on either side
Vasoconstriction /dilation occur
Tunica media (smooth muscle )
Effect arterioles most
Tunica externa
Dense irregular connective tissue surrounding vessel (outer)
Larger arteries are
Elastic (named are musclar)
Arterioles are
Easily affected by ANS and local factors. 10-100 micrometers
Vasoconstriction
Capillaries are
Business end of circulatory system
8-1 micrometer. Endothelium & areolar CT
Veins are
Low pressure, check valves
Capillary exchange
- As blood comes in under pressure, hydrostatic pressure forces fluid out through clefts/pores.
- colloid osmotic pressure (albumin coming back in cell with fluid)
Colloid is
Suspension of protein in solution
Lymphatic system
Drainage system takes remaining 20% of fluid & debris surrounding capillaries and brings it back to heart.
Lymphatic filariae
Nematode infection of lymph nodes causes peripheral edema
Venous return
Not under pressure
Skeletal muscle pump brings blood back.
Respiratory pump (negative pressure brings blood out)
