10. General Questions Flashcards
10.1 - Why are you interested in this role and our company?
I find this role a very exciting opportunity… Being a part of Vestas’ latest and largest generation of turbine to be commissioned across the world. I set my sights towards commissioning at the start of my career in Offshore Wind and through years of working in various roles to gain strong knowledge of the WTG, I know I am ready to progress and become a valuable member of the commissioning team. The opportunity to work with Vestas while doing this would be a exceptional and proud achievement in my career and I would be so grateful to secure this opportunity.
10.2 - What do you consider your greatest strength as a technician?
I have excellent technical proficiency, this being strong knowledge of systems, tools and equipment relevant to my field and further to this I am effective in troubleshooting and repairs.
Therefore, I have the ability to quickly diagnose issues and develop effective solutions.
I play close attention to detail and am safety orientated ensuring all aspects of a task are completed correctly and safely.
I have a friendly and professional demeanor to help build strong relationships between team members/clients helping create a positive work culture. Further to this, I have excellent communication skills, being able to clearly explain issues and solutions to help foster trust and a true understanding of the task.
I have the ability to effectively manage time and prioratise tasks as well as the capability to adapt and ajdust to evolving scenarios or changes in the work scope.
10.3 - Where do you see yourself in five years?
Within the 5 years my focus would to become an expert in commissioning where I will also look to excel in the role. I am very motivated towards my career and development, so I would look to becoming a specialist in commissioning where I would be the ‘Go-to guy’, to gain recognition throughout Vestas, give an increased responsibility and personal satisfaction in the role. Further to this, in the long term I would set my sights to commissioning project management.

10.4 - Have you ever had to stop work? Why?
During my time in service, me and my team were sent to a WTG to troubleshoot an issue suspected with the grid breakers in the LSI of the V164. It was found that the breaker needed to be replaced and that the SOV would approach, connect and drop off the spare parts along with new AWP.
Once the parts and documentation arrived, the task could be started. With the LSI grid breakers being the boundary between the LV and HV of the turbine, I suspected that the AWP wouid be a Cross Boundary type, however, the AWP given was not. The AWP given did isolate the grid breakers but was did not cover the changing of the them.
Work was stopped as I spent time looking through Vestas’ sharepoint page. I eventually found the correct AWP for the replacement of the Grid Breakers, which was a cross boundary document. I radioed the SOV office/supervisors and explained my reasons for stopping work and being unable to continue.
10.5 - Have you had any recommendations or input into optimizing workflow/improving a process?
During the annual servicing of the turbine the company were looking to move away from paper copies of instructions/records, with the intent of digitalising it all.
The team AT’s were issued Ipads to access digital version of the SIF and SII and record/check-off the annual tasks through the Vestas app, ‘MyTasks’.
In the SIF and SII forms for an annual service, there are hundreds of tasks that need carrying out on the turbine, where the information for these tasks were detailed across a number of large PDF documents.
As ‘MyTasks’ was incompatible with the split-screen function on Ipads the AT/service technician would have to open the SIF in ‘MyTasks’ and search within the SII for the relative task. The AT would be continuously opening and closing the two different apps trying to locate the tasks that correspond on both applications, resulting in a loss of time, as this process was done frequently through every WTG service.
As ‘MyTasks’ was a Vestas application, my suggestion to the workflow process was to speak to the relevant team to re-design the application and make it compatible with the split-screen function. This would allow the task instruction on one side of the Ipad and the recording/signing-off of the task on the other.
10.6 - Why did you leave Vestas?
I never intended to leave Vestas and I was not actively looking for a new role elsewhere. A previous colleague I had worked with for a number of years within Vestas, had joined GE - Dogger Bank, a few months before I resigned from my Vestas role. He mentioned the new role and what it entailed and that I should think about considering it.
The role with GE provided new opportunities that I was looking to pursue at some point in my career; working with HV/becoming authorised to switch.
The SAP role was something I discussed with my Service Supervisors and SOV manager at Vestas, however, the opportunity was not there at that time.
After much consideration, I decided to apply for the role and became more invested as I progressed to the next stage of interview.
It was a very difficult decision to make and one that I had to put a lot of thought into as I loved going to work at Moray East. It was a very positive and friendly environment to be a part of but ultimately the deciding factor at the time was around the development aspect, which is important to me.
I have continued to maintain relationships with people in Vestas as I believe that it was not a chapter that had closed for me. I made it clear to my previous manager that I wouldn’t hesitate to return to Vestas when the time was right or the opportunity came up.
10.7 - Why should we hire you for the role?
I am passionate towards the industry and developing my career within it. I continuously look for ways to better myself and become a more valuable asset in my role. This has been shown through my dedication towards further education while working full time, as I have completed two engineering HNC’s. My drive for this is to ensure that I am always up to date and knowledgeable within my field, and this is something I will continue to pursue to ensure I am carrying out my role to the best of my ability.
Having worked for Vestas for a number of years, I am familiar with policies, ways of working, community and culture as well as the design, construction and operation of the turbine. I feel I have also built trust and rapport among previous employees across the company. With this, awareness I can bring value to the role and make an impact in the role from the outset.
What is your biggest weakness?
In the past I have found myself to be a little hesitant to delegate tasks, especially when working on a complex problem. This is due to my nature of wanting to carry every task to the highest standard, especially being the AT where I’m putting my name to the AWP and signing off the work.
I have come to the realisation that collaboration can lead to better solutions and a more efficient workflow. With this, I have actively been working on building trust in my team, getting to know their strengths and weaknesses and creating a positive culture between us so that they also feel comfortable asking for support if they need it.
That’s the environment I want to breed on a turbine so we can all support each other and come together.
