10. Anatomy of the visual pathways. Flashcards

1
Q

what is the basic anatomy of the visual pathway ?

A

retina - transduce the light to electric impulses using rods and cones
te rods and cones deliver it to ganglion cells in the retina
axons of the ganglion cells make the optic nerve

optic nerve - runs through the optic canal

cross over in optic chasm
fibres arising from the nasal side cross over and fibres arising from the temporal side does not cross over

optic tracts
fibres leaving the optic chasm gather together to form the optic tract

lateral geniculate nucleus - in the thalamus

optic radiation
impulse from the lateral geniculate nucleus to primary visual cortex

primary visual cortex - in the around the calcimine fissure of the occipital lobe

Q

most of the optic tracts end at the Laterla geniculate nucleus and before they are passed into the V1 of primary visual cortex what happens ?

A

tags every object with velocity tag

and send some fibres to V2 v3
