1 Structure IDs- Forearm (Muscles/Ligaments) Flashcards
Ulnar collateral ligament
Function: resists excessive cubital valgus
Attachments: from medial epicondyle to medial margin of coronoid process and olecranon process
Radial collateral ligament
Function: resists excessive cubital varus
Attachments: from lateral epicondyle to anular ligament
Anular ligament
Function: stabilizes proximal radioulnar joint
Attachments: from anterior margin of the radial notch to posterior margin or radial notch surrounding head of radius
Interosseous membrane
Attachments: from interosseous border of radius to interosseus border of ulna
Transverse carpal ligament
Function: prevent s bowstringing of the tendons of the flexor pollicis longus, flexor digitorum superficialis and flexor digitorum profundus
Attachments: from the pisiform and hook of hamate to scaphoid and trapezium
Collateral ligaments of metacarpophalangeal joints
Function: stabilizes metacarpophalangeal joints
Attachments: from the head of metacarpals to base of adjacent proximal phalanx
Abductor pollicis longus (C6-8)
Attachments: from proximal posterior radius, ulna and interosseous membrane to the base of the 1st metacarpal and trapezium
Actions: abducts and extends thumb at carpometacarpal joint and abducts hand and wrist (radial deviation)
Innervation: radial nerve
Brachioradialis (C5-6)
Attachments: from the lateral supracondylar ridge of the humerus to the distal radius lateral to the styloid process
Actions: flexes the elbow
Innervation: radial nerve
Extensor carpi radialis brevis (C6-8)
Attachments: from the lateral epicondyle of the humerus (common extensor origin) to the base pf the 3rd metacarpal
Actions: extends and abducts hand at wrist (radial deviation)
Innervation: radial nerve
Extensor carpi radialis longus (C6-8)
Attachments: from the lateral supracondylar ridge of the humerus to the base of the 2nd metacarpal
Actions: extends and abducts hand at wrist (radial deviation) and assists in flexion of the elbow
Innervation: radial nerve
Extensor carpi ulnaris (C6-8)
Attachments: from the lateral epicondyle of the humerus (common extensor origin) to the base of the 5th metacarpal
Actions: extends and adducts hand at wrist (ulnar deviation)
Innervation: radial nerve
Extensor digitorum (C6-8)
Attachments: from the lateral epicondyle of the humerus (common extensor origin) to the extensor expansions of digits 2-5
Actions: extends phalanges (primarily at the metacarpophalangeal, secondarily at interpharangeal) and hand at wrist
Innervation: radial nerve
Extensor digiti minimi (C7-8)
Attachments: from the lateral epicondyle of the humerus (common extensor origin) to the digital expansion of the 5th digit
Actions: extends 5th digit (metacarpophalangeal and interphalangeal)
Innervation: radial nerve
Extensor indicis (C7-8)
Attachments: from the posterior surface of the ulna and interosseous membrane to the digital expansion of the 2nd digit
Actions: extends 2nd digit (metacarpophalangeal and interphalangeal)
Innervation: radial nerve
Extensor pollicis brevis (C6-8)
Attachments: from the posterior radial surface and interosseous membrane to the base of the 1st proximal phalanx
Actions: extends thumb (metacarpophalangeal) and extends and abducts CMC joint
Innervation: radial nerve
