1. Sensation & Perception Flashcards
endolymph
watery fluid in the membranous labyrinth of the ear
perilymph
the fluid found in the bony labyrinths of the ear
Perilymph vs. Endolymph
ENDO - mEmbraNOus (endo- w/in membrane)
PERI-lymph –> found in BONE
(Think: PERI - peri chicken has BONES)
What is the function of the pupil?
involved in regulating the amount of light coming into the eye; NOT responsible for focusing it
What is the function of the cornea?
Responsible for GATHERING AND FOCUSING light
What is the function of the lens?
Similar to cornea, in that it is responsible for gathering and focusing light
What is the function of the retina?
It transduces the light into electrical signals that are sent to the brain
Which component of the eye transduces light into electrical signals?
Retina!
feature detection
(?) phenomenon in which …
signal detection
phenomenon in which a specific noise can be discerned from the background of many noises
if patient has difficulty walking due to loss of ability to feel where feet are in space is an example of loss of:
kinesthetic sense (proprioception)
kinesthetic sense
aka proprioception, refers to ability to tell where body parts are in 3D space; sensors are found predominantly in muscles and joints
vestibular sense; what happens when lost?
sensation of balance;
when lost, this could cause sense of dizziness or vertigo; not an inability to feel one’s feet
THALAMUS
Sensory relay center of the brain! Responsible for sorting sensory stimuli before routing to the target areas in the cortex
Interposition
the term for the monocular depth cue when 2 objects are in the one line of vision and the close object conceals part of the further object
