1. Processing room design Flashcards
Darkroom Characteristics
-Room Humidity and Temperature -Construction -Drainage and Water Supply -Lighting and Ventilation -Film and Chemical Storage
the unseen change in the atomic structure of the crystal lattice that results in the production of a visible image
Latent Image
The function of a radiographic ______ is to protect the film from white light and ionizing radiation during handling and processing
darkroom
Countertops and other work surfaces
should be grounded to reduce the risk
of static electricity
-Proper Film Handling
-Maintaining the range of 30-60%
relative humidity
Proper ventilation to prevent buildup
of heat and humidity
-Temperature should be maintained
in the range of 65-75°F (18-24°C)
Darkroom walls should be
painted in _____ and _____ to increase reflectance of light
emitted from the safelight
pastels,
light color
Darkroom walls should have _______ to protect the personnel and
prevent fogging of the film
appropriate lead shielding
Darkrooms should have adequate water
supply and drainage
-Old processors - hot and cold water
-Modern processors - cold water
-Adequate drainage - can handle
2.5x maximum outflow (10 gallons
per minute or 38L/min)
Darkrooms should have adequate ______ for film and chemicals,
and appropriate film transfer systems
storage space
Darkroom door should be designed to
keep people from entering the room
while the films are being processed
Single-hinged door
Double door entrance
Revolving doors
Maze-type entrance
Simplest and cheapest
Single hinge doors
Weather stripping around door frame
Single hinge doors
Can cause accidental exposure to white light
Single hinge doors
Has 2 doors and a hallway
between them
Double door entrance
One cannot be opened unless
the other is closed
Double door entrance
Can cause accidental trapping
Double door entrance
Most efficient but the most
expensive type
Revolving door
Composed of 2 cylinders, a fixed outer cylinder, and a
revolving inner cylinder
Revolving door
Does not use a door at all.
Instead, there is a minimum of 2
hallways that run parallel to each other
Maze-type entrance
Takes up too much floor space
Maze-type entrance
No restriction in area access
Maze-type entrance
Darkrooms should have 2 types of lighting:
the overhead lights and
safelights
necessary for
cleaning, maintenance, and possible
emergencies
Overhead lights
a light source that emits
wavelengths to which particular types
of film are not sensitive
Safelight
Safelight must be mounted at least _____
from feed trays or loading
counters
3-4 ft
A _____ bulb is
recommended for single emulsion film (Safelight)
7.5W or 15W
Common type of film used in screen cassettes
Blue-Violet sensitive Film
is primarily sensitive to
the colors blue, indigo, and violet
Blue-Violet sensitive Film
Blue-Violet sensitive Film normally uses a _____ safelight
amber colored
Blue-Violet sensitive Film
Common types of filter are
Kodak Wratten 6B or Kodak Mor-Lite
Generally sensitive to the GBV portion
of the visible spectrum
Orthochromatic Film
Orthochromatic Film normally uses a _____ safelight
pure red
Orthochromatic Film
Common types of filter are
Kodak GBX series
Generally sensitive to red-amber light
spectrum
New Modality Film (Red-amber sensitive film)
New Modality Film normally uses a _____ safelight
dark green
New Modality Film
Common type of filter is the
Kodak Number 7
Sensitive to all colors of the visible spectrum
Panchromatic Film
Cannot be exposed to any safelight
Panchromatic Film
Safelight testing should be done
semiannually
Safelight testing should be done ____ frequently if problems are found
More
Safelight testing should be done if ____ are changed
filters
Safelight Testing
- Verify proper distance, check bulb
wattage, and inspect filter for cracks
and pinholes. - Load a cassette with fresh film
- Place the cassette on the radiographic
table with 40 SID - Place the step wedge on the center of
the cassette and expose. - In the darkroom, lay exposed film on
counter and cover half with an opaque material. - Expose the film to normal safelight
conditions for 2 min and then process film. - Place film on viewbox illuminator and
observe for defined line or break between
halves.
Leakage testing and
Processing Area Condition
- Turn on all white lights surrounding
darkroom. Inside the darkroom, shut off
all lights. - After eyes adapt to dark, check for white
leaks. - Turn on overhead lighting and inspect
area - Check ventilation and temperature of
area. - Check film storage area.
- Correct any problems or deficiencies.
Films should be stored in areas with a temperature of _____ and a relative humidity of _____
55-75° F (13-24°C) ,
30-60%
Chemicals should be stored in areas with a
temperature of ______.
Temperature should not exceed ______ for long periods
40-85°F(4-30°C),
70°F(21°C)
It is best not to store film and chemicals
_____ each other
near
