1 organisation 1 Flashcards
What is Cell?
The cell is the smallest functional unit of life that can exist independently
What is a tissue?
A tissue is a group of similar cells that work together for a specific function
What does Muscle tissue do?
Muscle tissue produces movement
What does Glandular tissues do?
secretes enzymes and hormones
Epithelial tissue
Epithelial tissue covers surfaces to protect them
What do xylem and phloem tissues do?
In plants, xylem tissue carries water and phloem tissue carries sugars
How is an organ formed?
An organ is formed from several tissues working together for a particular function
What tissues does your stomach have?
- Glandular tissue to release digestive juices
- Muscle tissue to churn food and digestive juices
- Epithelial tissue to line the inside
Name a plants 3main organs
-Roots
-Stems
-Leaves
(Flowers)
What is a organ system?
An organ system is a collection of organs that work together to perform an overall body function
How does your digestive system work?
The Digestive System breaks down large, insoluble molecules into smaller, soluble molecules so that they can be absorbed into the blood and used by our cells
Name five organ systems:
- digestive
- circulatory
- nervous
- reproductive
- musculoskeletal
Explain what the Nervous system does?
This is made up of nerve cells (neurons) that carry electrical impulses around the body to coordinate responses
Explain what the Circulatory system does?
This is formed from the heart and blood vessels, in order to transport oxygen and nutrients to all of the body cells
Explain how the reproductive system works?
Either male or female organs to enable sexual reproduction to take place
Explain what the The musculoskeletal system does
This is the bones of the body and the muscles attached to them for movement
How do you get an organism? (7 stages)
- Atom
- Molecule
- cell
- tissue
- organ
- organ system
- organism
List the order of the organs in the digestive system?
- mouth (salivary glands)
- Oesophagus/gullet
- stomach
- Liver
- gall bladder
- pancreas
- small intestine
- Large intestine
- Rectum
Explain what the mouth does in the digestive system
-contains teeth to break up food and salivary glands to secrete amylase enzyme (which breaks down starch) in the saliva
Explain what the esophagus does in the digestive system?
Pushes food down to the stomach
Explain what the stomach does in the digestive system
- pummels the food with its walls
- it produces the protease enzyme (digests protein), pepsin
- produces hydrochloric acid to kill pathogens and to ensure the right pH for the protease enzyme to work (pH 2)
Explain what the liver does in the digestive system
- It’s where bile is produced
- bile neutralises stomach acid and emulsifies (breaking down of fat) fat
Explain what the gall bladder does in the digestive system
-it’s where bile is stored before it’s released into the small intestine
Explain what the pancreas does in the digestive system
- Produces protease, amylase and lipase enzymes
- Then releases them into the small intestine
Explain what the small intestine does in the digestive system
- produces protease, amylase and lipase enzymes to complete digestion
- this is also where the digested food is absorbed out of the digestive system into the blood
Explain what the large intestine does in the digestive system
It’s where excess water is absorbed from the food
Explain what the rectum does in the digestive system
The rectum followed by the anus allow any undigested matter to be egested
Define catalyst
A substance that speeds up a chemical reaction without being used up its self
