1. Movement Skills Notes Flashcards
What is a motor skill?
A skill that requires voluntary body and/or limb movements to achieve its goal
How are skills determined as open or closed?
- Stability of environment
- Pacing of skill (internal, external)
- Inter-trial variability (high, low)
What is an open skill?
An externally paced, low predictability and high variability skill
Example of an open skill
- white water rafting
- tennis match
- surfing
What is a closed motor skill?
An internally paced, high predictability and low variability skill
Example of a closed motor skill
- hitting a T-ball
- gymnastics routine
- free throw in basketball
How are skills determined as gross or fine?
- based on the amount of precision
- the size of the muscles or muscle groups being activated
What are gross motor skills?
Skills that require the use of large musculature and momentum is produced with minimal precision
Example of a gross motor skill
- running
- swimming
- throwing a javelin
What is a fine motor skill?
A skill that requires small muscles or muscle groups and have a high degree of precision
Example of a fine motor skill
- throwing darts
- calf raise
- spin bowling motion in the wrist
What is a discrete movement skill?
A skill with clearly defined beginning and ending points
Characteristics of a discrete movement skill
- one distinct movement
- short/brief duration
- simple movement
Example of a discrete movement skill
- simple dive into a pool
- swinging a golf club
- tennis serve
What is a serial movement skill?
A group of discrete skills occurring together to make a new and complex movement/ phrase
Characteristics of serial movement skills
- performed in a series
- movements are one after another
- prolonged duration
Examples of a serial movement skill
- dance routine
- gymnastics routine
- figure skating
- dribbling a soccer ball
- triple jump
What is a continuous movement skill?
A skill with no clear beginning or end point
Characteristics of a continuous movement skill
- same movement repeated multiple times
- may have a clear end point but not a clear start
Example of a continuous movement skill
- running
- walking
- swimming
- rowing
What is a fundamental movement skill?
A basic motor skill that uses multiple parts of the body and is the basis of sport specific skills
What ages are fundamental motor skills learnt?
6-10 years old
Examples of fundamental movement skills
- catching
- running
- jumping
- floating
What are the four types of fundamental movement skills?
- locomotor
- stability
- manipulative
- aquatic
What are sport specific skills?
The combination of several different movements that progress from fundamental movement skills to become sport specific skills
Examples of sport specific skills
- shooting a basketball
- hitting a cricket ball
- throwing a javelin
What are some of the fundamental skills required for AFL?
- running
- jumping
- catching
- balance
What is self efficacy?
The perception of one’s ability to reach a goal
How are well developed motor skills an enabler for movement?
If someone has good motor skill development, they will perform better at a young age. This will give good results and this will motivate player to participate more. This creates a positive feedback loop
How are a lack of motor skill development a barrier to movement?
If learners have a lack of encouragement to be active young, they will reside to a sedentary lifestyle. This means they will lack skill development. This will further lead poor performance and the learner will quickly become discouraged
Examples of modified sports for youth engagement
- Milo cricket
- net, set, go
- Aussie hoops
What are some constraints added to children’s modified sports that will boost engagement?
- shorter games
- no contact
- less players
- modified equipment
