1. Biosecurity Flashcards
define security
procedures or measures designed to protect the population (human and animal) against harmful biological or biochemical substances
what would happen without biosecurity?
- Financial and commercial losses
- health implications for animals
- health implications for clients/staff (zoonotic disease)
what are the sources of pathogens on a farm?
- human and or animal movement
- contact with other farms
- wildlife/pests
- contaminated feed/water
what biosecurity is there in practice?
- cleaning protocols
- waste disposal
- appropriate PPE
- regular hand washing
- staff training
what are nosocomial infections
those acquired in a hospital/practice setting
what are the 5 waste categories
- clinical
- cytotoxic
- pharmaceutical
- offensive
- domestic
what is clinical waste?
any veterinary waste that could cause disease e.g blood contaminated items/body parts
what is cytotoxic waste?
Waste contaminated with medicinal products that are toxic, carcinogenic, toxic for reproduction or mutagenic
what is pharmaceutical waste?
waste contaminated with pharmaceuticals
what is offensive waste?
waste that is non-hazourdous but unpleasant e.g faeces. if rise of infection then clinical
what is domestic waste?
normal, household waste
what is a biofilm?
a slime layer attached to a surface, made up of a community of microorganisms
how do biofilms form?
- attachment of microorganisms to a surface e.g plaque
- colonisation with the formation of multi-celled layers
- exopolymer production- form a matrix of columns which maximise nutrient delivery and waste removal
- dispersal, part of biofilm detaches and releases bacteria to start new biofilm
define cleaning
the removal of organic material using soap and water. ideally leave surface to dry before then disinfecting
define disinfection
the process of eliminating or reducing harmful microorganisms from inanimate objects/surfaces
