1. ATP Flashcards
Structure of ATP (in comparison to DNA & RNA)
Single nucleotide
Is ATP energy itself?
NONONONONONO
What 3 subunits are nucleotides made from?
Phosphate group
Pentose sugar
Organic nitrogenous base
Phosphate group of ATP
A chain of 3 phosphate groups with high-energy covalent bonds.
These bonds are easily broken, but when the break (in a hydrolysis reaction) they release lots of energy.
What pentose sugar is in ATP?
Ribose
ATP + water
ADP (adenosine diphosphate) + P(subscript i) + energy
What is P subscript i?
Inorganic phosphate ion
What’s special about the ATP + water reaction?
It’s reversible!!
Condensation & hydrolysis
ATP is made in…
respiration
Features of ATP
- it’s an “energy currency”
- easily transported around a cell
- can release energy quickly in small amounts
- can’t be stored
What enzyme catalyses the hydrolysis of ATP?
ATP hydrolase
Is ATP considered relatively simple or complex?
Simple
What can the inorganic phosphate ion be used for?
Phosphorylation
This makes compounds more reactive
What enzyme catalyses the condensation of ADP?
ATP synthase
