Typical or normal development/behaviour
Development or behaviour that psychologists consider to be categorised within the expected range
Atypical or abnormal
development/behaviour
Development or behaviour that psychologists consider to be categorized outside the expected range. (Not necessarily a bad thing).
What are the five categories of atypical/typical behaviour
- Social norms
- Statistical rarity
- Maladaptive behaviour
- Cultural perspectives
- Personal distress
Social norms
Situations that are influenced by social views and are considered in certain communities but not others.
Statistical rarity
Behaviour or development that is considered abnormal as it sits outside of the expected range.
Personal distress
Overwhelming emotions that is felt by an individual.
Cultural perspectives
Situations that are influenced by cultural views or perspectives
Neurotypical
An individual who’s neurological development is functioning within the typical range.
Neurodiverse
A group of people who’s neurological development functions outside the typical range and is rare.
Neurodivergent
An individual who’s neurological development is functioning outside the typical range
Maladaptive
Behaviour that is known to interfere with individuals to adapt or develop effectively in their environment.
Adaptive
Behaviour that is known to help individuals adapt or develop with their environment effectively.
ASD (Autism spectrum disorder)
A neurodevelopmental disorder which are identified by two main criterias:
- Constant troubles with social communications and interactions.
- Restricted and repetitive patterns in behaviour, interests, and activities.
ADHD (Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder)
A neurodevelopmental disorder which are idfentified by two main criterias:
- Inattention
- Hyperactivity and Impulsivity
