Biopsychosocial approach
It helps better understand an individual’s mental well-being and development through the influence of the interactions between biological (hereditary), psychological (cognitive), and social factors.
Biopsychosocial model
A diagram that shows the correlation between the three aspects of the approach. (biological, psychological, social).
Maladaptive behaviour
Behaviour that is considered to be dysfunctional, harmful, or non-productive to the point that it inteferes with a persons ability to develop or adapt to their environment appropriately and effectively.
Risk factors
A range of factors that can increase the likelihood of a person developing atypically or a mental illness.
Protective factors
A range of factors that increase the chances of an individual developing typically and mentally healthy.
Mentally healthy
An individual that is capable of performing daily activities and being resilient.
Mental health problems
A relatively temporary disruption that interferes with a person’s everyday routine and development.
Mental disorder
A relatively long-lasting condition that affects the development, behaviour, and mood of an individual.
Attachment
The close social and emotional bond between an infant and it’s caregiver.
Secure attachment (b)
The attachment where the child feels comforted by the caregiver.
Insecure-resistant attachment (a)
The attachment where the child doesn’t feel comforted by the caregiver and is clingy but is also anxious on the return of the caregiver
The caregiver’s response to the child is inconsistent.
Insecure-avoidant attachment (c)
The attachment where the child seeks a little comfort but isn’t effected when the caregiver leaves.
