Mini-Pills
Progesterone only. Indicated for women with contraindications to estrogen. Good contraceptions without ovulation suppression.
Contraceptive Patch
Patches applied to butt, lower abs, upper outer arm, or upper torso that delivers norelgestromin for a 7 day period
Contraceptive Patch Disadvantages
Possible thromboembolism; HA; Nausea
Vaginal Ring Advantages
Fitting by a health professional is NOT required. Worn for 3 wks/month and left in place during intercourse.
Vaginal Ring Disadvantages
Slight discomfort; foreign body sensation, leukorrhea, vaginitis; coital problems
Injectable Contraceptive (DepoProvera, Luminal)
Progesterone suspension administered IM into the gluteus maximus or deltoid q3mo
Injectable Contraceptive Advantages
Decreased risk of ectopic preg; Decreased risk of endometrial CA; Decreased incidence of sickle cell crisis; May improve endometriosis
Injectable Contraceptive Disadvantages
Reduction in bone mineral density; Mood changes & depression
Implantable Contraceptive (Norplant)
Small rod implanted in arm that releases etonogestrel
Implantable Contraceptive Advantages
Maintains efficacy for up to 3 yrs
Implantable Contraceptive Disadvantages
Menstrual abnormalities; wt gain
Progestin Containing IUD
Copper T380A device or Levonorgestrel-releasing device
Progestin Containing IUD Advantages
Lifespan of at least 10 yrs
Progestin Containing IUD Disadvantages
Expensive; increased risk of PID and ectopic pregnancy; Contraindicated with HIV; Risk of uterine perforation or uterine expulsion
