Primary infertility
Failure to achieve pregnancy where the female partner has NOT previously been pregnant
Secondary infertility
Involuntary infertility with proven past fertility
Fecundity
The ability for fertilization to occur; Measured as “fecundity rate”
Sterility
Absolute inability to have children
Spermatogonia & oogonia
Germ cells that will eventually develop into mature sperm or egg
Where does spermatogenesis occur?
In the seminiferous tubules of the testes
Sertoli cells
Cells that stretch from the lumen to the edge of the seminiferous tubule that nourish developing sperm. Form a blood-testis barrier to control spermatogenesis & inhibit this before puberty.
Granulosa cells
Somatic cells closely associatd with oocytes that aid oocyte maturity and ovulation.
Normal rate of pregnancy
85% of couples attempting conception will be successful within 1 yr
Infertility
Failure to become pregnant after 1 yr
Infertility >35 y/o
Failure to become pregnant after 6 mo
Peak age of fertility for females
24-25 yrs
Maximum age for successful pregnancy

Identified causes of female infertility
Mechanical factors; Cervical factors; Ovulatory dysfunction/failure
Causes of ovulatory dysfunction
PCOS; Stress; Thyroid dz; Hyperprolactinemia; Meds (any CNS drug can increase prolactin); CNS tumors; Aging
