what is the triple point in a PT diagram
it is the point where all three phases are in equilibrium with one another
what is the critical point
it is at a high pressure and temperature, where everything past it is a super critical region where molecules behave differently
for the phase coexistence line between the gas and liquid states, what does the line between temperature and pressure tell us?
it can tell us the vapor pressure or the boiling point
the slope being positive between gas and liquid states tells us what
it tells us that an increase in temperature will give an increase in vapor pressure
or it will tell us that an increase in pressure will give an increase in boiling point
for the solid to gas phase line, at a given temperature we can figure out the
vapor pressure of the solid
for the solid to gas phase line, at a given pressure, we can figure out the
sublimation temperature
for a solid to liquid phase line, at a given pressure we can figure out the
melting temperature
for a solid to liquid phase line, when the density of the solid is higher than the liquid then the slope is
positive, so higher pressures mean higher melting temperatures
for a solid to liquid phase line, when the density of the solid is less than the liquid then the slope is
negative, so higher pressures would result in lower melting temperatures
