0.1 Intro Flashcards
compare the structure of jejunum and ileum
- ileum is thinner
- ileum has less internal folds
how does the mouth contribute to infection control?
lysozymes in saliva
describe the chemical breakdown in stomach
-proteases create and acidic environment which denatures proteins
-intrinsic factor aids absorption of B12
what is chyme?
fluid that passes out from stomach containing gastric secretions and partly digested food
how do liver and pancreas connect to duodenum?
connect to second part through a common entrance to deliver bile and pancreatic secretions into gut tube
why are short chain fatty acids made in large bowel?
to aid the correct environment for bacteria
does large or small bowel absorb more water?
small
what is the peritoneum made from?
layers of mesothelium: simple squamous epithelium
what does the peritoneum secrete?
serous fluid into peritoneal cavity
define intra peritoneal structures
peritoneum rests on surface of viscera of stomach, small intestine, liver… and envelops them
define retroperitoneal structures
anterior viscera of kidneys, large bowel…. covered only.
forms a retroperitoneal space
what’s a mesentery?
double layer of peritoneum which allows passage of blood vessels and lymph from retroperitoneal space to viscera without breaching peritoneal cavity
-main one is to small intestine
why is the passage to the stomach NOT a mesentery?
too short
peritoneal ligament
double folds of peritoneum connecting viscera e.g. liver to stomach
benefit of mesentery
holds small bowel in place; prevents twisting on itself
