Zoonoses in Companion Animals Flashcards
Define the term zoonosis
Zoonoses are diseases and infections which are naturally transmitted between vertebrate animals and man
Implications of zoonoses to the veterinary profession
Risk of becoming infected by a zoonosis is high for vets
Clients are often unaware of the risks
Legal ramifications if a client becomes affected and ‘never told’
Name 3 zoonoses - small animal
Toxoplasma
Cryptosporidium
Giardia
Name a zoonotic disease which is a part of the Canine Infectious Respiration Disease (CIRD) complex (also called kennel cough)
Bordatella brochiseptica
Name the important factors of the kennel cough vaccine
Intranasal, live vaccine which aerosolises - potential zoonosis
Always discuss if client is immunocompromised/suppressed
What are the main zoonosis transmitted by the following: foxes, badgers, small rodents ad bats
Foxes - Echinococcus granulosus
Badgers - Mycobacterium bovis
Small rodents - Borellia burgdorferi
Bats - European Bat Lyssavirus
Name the 4 aspects of control guidelines for zoonoses transmission
Elimination - excluding wildlife, cleaning
Engineering controls - ventilation, washing equipment
Administrative controls - hand washing requirements, rules/guidelines
PPE - last defence
What zoonotic disease do Ixodes spp. of tick carry
Borellia burgdorferi (Lyme disease)
How is leptospirosis spread
Direct or indirect contact with urine of affected animals
What animals does salmonella affect
Any animal with an ‘intestinal tract’
Survives in frozen meat
Why is salmonella able to survive bleach
They form a biofilm
How is Psittacosis spread
Airborne particles of respiratory secretions, dried faeces or dust
What zoonotic fungi is common in clinically healthy rabbits
Encephalitozoon caniculi
Why is Echinococcus multicularis important to know about
Notifiable
Name the most common isolates from a cat bite
Pasteurella multocida subspecies multocida and septica
