Zone Comparison and You-phase tests--week 2 Flashcards
When did Cleve Backster develop the Zone Comparison Test?
1961
What are 3 principles of the Zone Comparison Test?
- Comparison Question technique. 2. Technique uniformity. 3. reduces “no opinion” results.
Describe the psychology of the ZCT (hint: innocent and guilty)
A guilty person focuses on the relevant questions An innocent person focuses on the comparison questions.
List Cleve Backster’s historical concepts.
- Psychological set (now Salience) 2. Super-dampening concept. 3. Anti-climax concept. 4. Total Chart Minute Concept. 5. Numerical Evaluation 6. SPOT Analysis
What is Super-dampening?
The examinee may be focusing on an outside issue.
What did Backster call super-dampening questions?
Symptomatic
What is anti-climax dampening concept?
The examinee may focus only on one exam question. A guilty person may focus on Relevant or Comparison. An innocent person may focus on a Comparison.
What is SPOT Analysis? (hint: what remains constant?)
comparing a comparison question to a relevant question where response capability remains relatively constant. This is the basis for numerical evaluation of charts.
List the ZCT format
- Neutral 2. Sacrifice Relevant 3. Symptomatic 4. Comparison 5. Relevant (primary) 6. Comparison (strongest/most broad) 7. Relevant (extension of primary) 8. Symptomatic 9. Comparison 10. Relevant (Secondary Relevant)
What questions are always the Primary Relevant questions?
R5 & R7 in ZCT
Give an example of a Primary Relevant questions R5 & R7
R5–Did you steal that car? R7–Did you steal that car from the parking lot?
What type of question is in the R10 position Always?
Secondary Relevant Addresses secondary involvement, guilty knowledge, or evidence connecting. Does not address direct involvement. Worded to be answered with a “no.”
Give an example of a secondary relevant:
Did you help steal that car? Do you know how that car was disposed of? Do you know where that car is now? Do you know for sure who stole that car?
Zone Comparison Test What position is the Sacrifice Relevant in?
2 Worded to be answered “yes” It is a “lead in” question and is not evaluated
Give an example of a SR question
Regarding the stolen car, do you intend to tell the truth?
Zone Comparison Test What positions are the comparison questions?
C4, C6, C9 These are PLC questions. Designed for the innocent. Can be rotated after the first chart.
What type of question always begins the ZCT?
A neutral Does not cause any response. Unrelated to the issue. Absorbs an initial response. Review this with the examinee at least 3 times Is a “YES” question. Can be modified to help identify countermeasures.
How is a neutral question modified to help identify countermeasures?
Use a “before this year……” intro to mimic a comparison question. standard: Is you in Texas? Are you called Fred? Is the lights on in this room?
Zone Comparison Test What positions are symptomatic questions?
3 & #8
Zone Comparison Test How are #3 and #8 designed to be answered?
3–yes #8–no designed to test for outside issues
Zone Comparison Test pose a #3
Do you believe I will only ask you the questions we have reviewed?
Zone Comparison Test pose a #8
Is there something else you are afraid I will ask a question about?
Zone Comparison Test What order are questions introduced?
- Sacrifice Relevant 2. Relevants (R5, R7, R10) 3. Comparisons (C4, C6, C9) 4. Neutrals (1, 1a, 1b) 5. Symptomatics (S8, S3)
Zone Comparison Test In the SPOT Comparison, what questions are R5 compared to?
C4 & C6
Zone Comparison Test In the SPOT Comparison, what questions are R7 compared to?
C6
Zone Comparison Test In the SPOT Comparison, what questions are R10 compared to?
C9
Explain Federal and ESS cut scores
Federal DI -3 in any subtotal OR -6 grand total NDI at least +1 sub AND +6 grand total ESS DI -4 grand OR -7 sub NDI +2 grand
How many targets per Zone Comparison Test?
ONE
Zone Comparison Test What type of question is #1?
Neutral
Zone Comparison Test What type of question is #2?
Sacrifice Relevant
Zone Comparison Test What type of question is #3?
Symptomatic
Zone Comparison Test What type of question is #4?
Comparison
Zone Comparison Test What type of question is #5?
Relevant
Zone Comparison Test What type of question is #6?
Comparison
Zone Comparison Test What type of question is #7?
Relevant
Zone Comparison Test What type of question is #8?
Symptomatic
Zone Comparison Test What type of question is #9?
Comparison
Zone Comparison Test What type of question is #10?
Relevant
What is the difference in question order between the ZCT and the You-Phase?
Drop C10 and switch 8 & 9
You-Phase Where is the primary type of question directed?
At the subject. By design the questions address primary involvement. Single-issue test.
You-Phase What is the You-phase Spot Analysis? What questions are compared?
R5 is compared to C4 & C6 R7 is compared to C6 & C8 both Primary Relevant questions are compared to two CQ
You-Phase List the Format
- N 2. SR 3. S 4. C 5. R 6. C 7. R 8. C 9. S
You-Phase What is the order of review?
- SR 2. R 3. C 4. N 5. Symptomatic
You-Phase What is the Golden Rule?
Single issue one target-one test
