Q

How is Zinc absorbed?

A

Mainly in the small intestine

  • Carrier-mediated which is saturable. It is separated into two parts, the apical and basolateral membrane transport
  • Passive which is non-saturable by parracellular diffusion

What is Acrodermatitis enteropathica (AE)?

A
A disease of zinc malabsorption
Zinc -responsive inborn error of metabolism
Symptoms include

15
Q

Why does the pancreas take up a lot of zinc

?

A

Because the insulin producing B-cells take up a lot of zinc because they need zinc to make and secrete insulin

16
Q

Besides absorption and excretion how else can zinc be regulated?

A

By the pancreas excretions of bile

17
Q

How is Zinc excreted?

A

Mainly fecal

but in diseases of muscle catabolism urinary excretion may increase

18
Q

What are the Zip proteins?

A

Importers

19
Q

What are the ZnT proteins?

A

Exporters

20
Q

Why are there so many Zinc transporters?

A

Because they are expressed in different tissues

21
Q

How much zinc is stored and where is most of it located?

A

Total zinc content is 1.5-2.5g and the skeletal muscle holds most of it.

22
Q

What is metallothionein?

A

A zinc storage protein and Copper storage

23
Q

How many AA does MT have and how many of those are cystienes?

A

61 and 20 are Cysteines

24
Q

How many atoms of Zinc /copper can bind to MT for storage?

A

7

25
Q

What are the functions of Zinc?

A
  1. Catalytic
    - greater than 300 known Zn metalloenzymes
  2. Structural
    - Zinc finger proteins
  3. Regulatory
    - Zinc finger proteins
26
Q

Zn Metalloenzymes

A

Alkaline phosphatase, RNA polymerases, Alcohol dehydrogenase
