What was Zimbardo’s aim?
To investigate the extent to which people would conform to the roles of prisoners and guards in a role playing simulation of prison life
What was Zimbardo’s method?
21 physically and mentally suitable uni students randomly assigned told of prisoner or guard. Prisoners were arrested outside their homes and blindfolded and taken to the mock prison where they were fingerprinted and booked. Guards wore uniform and reflective glasses to avoid eye contact. They were told to do what they seen necessary to maintain law and order in the prison. No physical violence was allowed.
What were Zimbardo’s results?
The study ended after 6 days instead of the scheduled 14 days when Zimbardo realised the extent of the psychological harm being caused. The guards were becoming aggressive and sadistic and prisoners become submissive and showed signs of anxiety. One prisoner had to leave after 36 hours due to fits of rage and crying.
What were Zimbardo’s conclusions?
Findings revealed that power of the situation to influence people’s behaviour. Guards and prisoners conformed to their roles within the prison environment.
