Q

Psychodynamic Determinism…

A

The psychodynamic approach is an example of psychic determinism, claiming we have no control over our own behaviour.

For example, Freud claimed that all behaviour was a result of unconscious mental processes and unconscious conflict between the Id and Superego.

This is a weakness as denying the existence of free will have implications in society. It may give people an excuse for their behaviour and this view is incompatible with the criminal justice system which holds people accountable for their actions.

Q

Psychodynamic Scientific credibility…

A

The psychodynamic approach includes abstract concepts which and untestable and therefore lack empirical evidence.

For example, we can’t directly observe or test the existence of the unconscious mind if defence mechanisms.

This is a limitation because it means the theories are unfalsifiable and since falsification is a key feature of science, this approach is therefore considered unscientific.

Q

Psychodynamic Case studies…

A

The psychodynamic approach relies on evidence from case studies as well as using techniques such as dream analysis and free association.

Case studies such as little hans are unique, one off opportunities.

Therefore, the approach suffers from low reliability as case studies can’t be replicated and findings can’t be checked for consistency.

Q

Psychodynamic Practical applications…

A

The psychodynamic approach has had useful practical (real world) applications.

For example, Freud developed psychoanalytic therapy for the treatment of many psychological disorders (using techniques such as dream analysis). This was influential in starting the development of psychoanalytic therapies.

This is a strength because it shows how the approach has been applied in the real world and used to help people suffering with disorders such as depression.

Furthermore, treatments for disorders have a positive impact on the economy because it allows people to return to work so they pay taxes that out money into industries such as the NHS.
