Who receives Zakat money?
The poor and needy, people in debt, Muslims studying Islam, travellers who need money, prisoners of war, new Muslims, schools, hospitals, libraries and mosques.
Why is Zakat important?
It cleanses their money and possessions from excessive desire for them or greed.
What happens during Sawm?
This is fasting that takes place during the month of Ramadan (9th month in the Islamic calendar). Muslims do not eat or drink anything during the daylight hours.
What are Muslims not allowed to do during Sawm?
Have sex, drink alcohol, smoke or complain about being hungry.
Instead what should they do?
They try to be especially good Muslims at this time. They will spend more time reading the Qur’an, going to the mosque and praying.
Who is exempt from fasting?
Very old, very young (under 12), pregnant or ill, they do not fast. If someone has a lifelong condition that means they cannot fast, they can pay a donation to feed 60 people instead.
What practices happen during Hajj?
Everyone is expected to wear an ihram: men wear two lengths of white cloth and women wear normal clothing with face and hands uncovered. This is so everyone is seen as equal.
