Yuki's study of emoticons Flashcards
what did yuki aim to do
they were building on research that suggested that japanese people read emotion from the eyes and american people read it from the mouth, they wanted to see if this was reflected in how emotion was perceived
what method was used
this was a cross cultural study
95 students from japan, 118 from america
independent groups design
they were showed 6 emoticons each with a different combination of eyes and mouths
they rated the emotion on a 1-9 scale 1 being the saddest
what were the results
japanese students gave higher ratings to emoticons with happy eyes
americans gave higher ratings to emoticons with happy mouths
what was the conclusion
japanese and american people interpreted culture differently, this was due to different cultural norms as americans were more open with emotions than japanese people
what is a strength of this study PEE
supported by research into differences in non verbal behaviour based off culture.
research into personal space has shown that arab men prefer smaller personal spaces and british men preferred smaller personal spaces
this is important because it shows that different cultural norms influence non-verbal behaviour which supports Yukis findings
what is a weakness of this study PEE
it used rating scales
rating scales are an example of quantitative data, emotion is a complex topic that can’t be reduced to a number on a scale, it limits perception of happiness to a single number
this is important because it shows that the interpretation of emotion was oversimplified i this study
