Darwins evolutionary theory Flashcards
what are 4 aspects of Darwins theory
the theory
non verbal communication as evolved and adaptive
comparison to human behaviour
serviceable habits
what was darwins theory
animals adapt to increase chance of survival, these behaviours are naturally selected and passed onto future generations
what did darwin mean by non verbal communication as evolved and adaptive (why did they develop these behaviors?)
non verbal behaviour evolved in animals to increase chance of survival like bearing teeth to show anger.
what did darwin mean by comparison to human behaviour
many behaviours seen in animals are seen in humans, like wrinkling your nose when you smell something foul, in animals this is used to stop them from inhaling something that may kill them
what did darwin mean by serviceable habits
these are habits adaptive to animals for the purpose of survival, in humans they are used to express emotions not so much survival.
what is a strength of this theory PEE
supported by research into facial expression
a study identifies 6 universal emotions: happiness, sadness, anger, fear, surprise and disgust, research showed that these emotions were linked to the same facial expression in every culture.
this is important because it shows that this must be found in our genes which supports darwins theory
what is a weakness of this theory PEE
struggles to explain differences in communication in cultures
according to his theory non verbal behaviour is genetic, this would suggest that the same non verbal behaviour is seen in every culture, which isn’t the case such as interpretations of personal space
this is important as it show evolution cant explain all non verbal behavior
