YR 10 Enzymes Flashcards
enzyme
a biological catalyst (typically proteins) that significantly speed up the rate of virtually all of the chemical reactions that take place within cells
substrate
a molecule upon which an enzyme acts
active site
is the region of an enzyme where substrate molecules bind and undergo a chemical reaction
catalyse
To catalyse a reaction, an enzyme will grab on (bind) to one or more reactant molecules. These molecules are the enzyme’s substrates
catalyst
a chemical that helps to speed up a chemical reaction but is not used up by the reaction
optimum temperature/pH
This optimal temperature is usually around human body temperature (37.5 oC) for the enzymes in human cells. Above this temperature the enzyme structure begins to break down (denature)
product
a substance produced by a chemical reaction
