What are delinquent subcultures?
It is used to refer to youth deviance such as joy - riding, vandalism and other anti - social behaviour which may not be necessarily be criminal
What are criminal subcultures?
These subcultures get involved in criminal behaviour which is often organised like drug- dealing, protection rackets or dealing in stolen goods. Cloward and Ohlin argued that not everyone will have access to such criminal subcultures
What are gangs?
Young people who regularly associate together often claimed by the police and media to cause harm to the community and are involved in persistent criminality with violence. Gangs will have names, leader, territory, a hierarchy and a set of rules relating to membership
What does Post modernist Bennet find out about youth subculture?
120 offenders were interviewed to find out reasons to join gangs. The 5 main reasons were for good times, keeping up appearances, excitement, desire to fight and righting wrongs which Bennet categorised as a buzz contrasting to the previous motive to gain
What does Marxist Harding (2014) say about gangs?
Gangs are a social arena of competition where members struggle for distinction, status, position and survival. Success is determined by street capital drawn from Bourdieu’s social and cultural capital. He saw gangs as a dangerous place, a game of high stakes
What are spectacular subcultures?
They describe flamboyant and highly visible subcultures across the UK. Social anxiety is built up surrounding them as they call formal sanctions and traditional views into question. CCCS define it as a social class issue. Teddy boys, punks and other subcultures from the 50s and 70s are examples
What are anti - school subcultures?
They are pupils who reject the norms and values of school and reverse them. They value trouble making, disrupting lessons, being cheeky and truanting. Anti - education subcultures reject the values of education more widely and are against qualifications
What are the newer / emerging types of deviant sucultres?
Subcultures which have developed on the internet like pro -anorexia website. This allows the youth to interact and share experiences, finding a common set of norms and values often contrasting to their real life behaviour
What does St John (2003) believe about youth subcultures?
They believe youth lack identity and resistance to previous generations
