Q

How is your degree subject relevant?

A

In my psychology degree, we did lots of modules on child development, learning etc
We learnt theories of cognitive development such as: Piaget’s theory of being an active listener (children

Vygotskys theory - zone of proximal development - the difference between what a child can do unaided and what they can do with support. Scaffolding occurs from a MKO, so that support is taken away as they can do it on their own. For example, MKO is sometimes used in maths, peer on peer help. Scaffolding used by the teacher or TA, then when they can do it, leave them be

Piaget - believed in children being active learners, constructing knowledge of the world
Discovery learning – the idea that children learn best through doing and actively exploring

Q

Why did you choose your degree subject and what inspired you?

A

I loved psychology at a level and my a level psychology teacher inspired me to take it. At this point in my life, I knew I wanted to work with children but was unsure on if it was education, social work or children nursing I wanted to go into (very different I know!!) but my a level teacher was very encouraging and praised me a lot which gave me confidence - she also stated how this degree would open up a lot of doors for me and after completing it I might have more idea of what I want to do
