What is a teachers responsibility in keeping children safe?
Keeping children safe from harm
All teachers have to take safeguarding training - this is to help you recognise when a child is at risk - and how to deal with any concerns you may have
Create excellent relationships with the children, so they know that you care and that they are safe in school
How would you contribute to making this school a safe environment for the children? Can you give some examples of this from your experience
Making sure that the children know that they can talk to me whenever they want too - ensuring they know I am here to listen and if they have any problems, I am there - a child once told me they were upset because their dad had been talking badly of their mum and I made sure that the child knew that they could confide in me and tell me when there was a problem and together we could solve it - not just their teacher
Class rules - such as being kind to each other, listening to each other etc - reinforces good behaviour and makes the children feel safe when they enter the classroom as they know everyone is following the rules
Give us an example of when you have had a safeguarding issue in school and tell us how you dealt with it
HH - slapping on his bum
I reassured the child that he wasn’t in trouble and there was nothing to worry about - but that mummy would be aware he had an accident in school
I then went and told the deputy safeguarding lead straight away (as the lead wasn’t there) and I had to fill out a form of what happened and what I said
How would you respond if a child disclosed?
Tell the child I am there for them - they can talk to me if they want and I am here to listen - make sure they feel safe, but I wouldn’t promise confidentiality, I would tell them I have to tell the people involved
then I would go to the safeguarding lead
What would you do if a child was continuing coming to school late?
Firstly, I would ask the child to see if there is anything going on at home or school
After that, I would discuss with my superviser the best approach to take about the repeated lateness
