Young People and Youth Subculture Flashcards
Ethnicity
LEA AND YOUNG
Most crime is ‘intra-racial’ and takes place within ethnic communities (black crimes against other black people).
Racially motivated crimes are much rarer.
Gender
MUNCIE
Small rises in recorded crime created a moral panic about female offending and ‘girl gangs’ rising.
Gender
CAMPBELL
Official crime data suggests the peak age for males offending is 18 whereas females are 15.
Girls offend in their teens and grow out of it whereas boys continue committing crimes when they’re adults.
Patterns and trends in youth deviance
They are hard to measure.
Anti-social behaviour orders are associated with youth deviance. Youth’s aged 10-17 accounted for 37% of ABSO’s issues in 2012.
Deviance is low-level and doesn’t appear in official statistics.
Youth identity today
ST. JOHN
Youth identity lacks the resistance of previous generations.
‘Tehnco-tribes’ show resistance such as social justice, green politics, and human rights.
Social class FARRINGTON
Socioeconomic deprivation was a key predictor of future criminality.
Social class JACOBSON ET AL.
3/4 of 200 children in custody had absent fathers.
1/2 of 200 lived in deprived households and/or unstable accommodation.
Under 1/2 of the 200 had run away from home.
