The Media and Youth Deviance Flashcards

1
Q

How does the media influence youth deviance?

A

Newspaper reports exaggerate stories to make them appear more interesting and dangerous which leads to deviance amplification.

The deviancy is amplified the more people are aware of it and fear the act.

As a result, more youths are encouraged to act deviant by labeling and the self-fulfilling prophecy.

Hooligan research of the 19th century showed newspapers denouncing the behaviour as ‘alien’ and ‘un-British’ and blamed the weather as a result of the hooligan’s deviancy.
