What is a youth subculture?
A culture within society’s wider culture with separate shared norms and values.
They’re a distinctive group of youths within the wider culture who stand out.
Who are the spectacular youth sub-cultures?
Highly visible subculture of the 1950’s - 1970’s
Includes skinheads, mods, rockers, punks, teddy boys, goths.
Had flamboyant and instantly recognisable styles.
Had confrontational attitudes.
POSTMAN ‘DISAPPEARANCE OF CHILDHOOD’
Postman blames the media for exposing children to the adult world who were too young and were sexualised by the media.
Youth begins earlier because of this, and people are staying in education for longer as a result.
MARGARET MEAD ‘SAMOAN STUDY’
Showed very little trauma is associated with adolescence and the transition to adulthood is unremarkable.
