Y8 Fragile Earth Flashcards
What is a fragile environment?
A fragile environment is a delicate and precious part of our world.
Give an example of a fragile environment
Antarctica, Tropical Rainforest, Seychelles, Great Barrier Reef, Desert, Savannah, Sahel, Outback, Uluru
Where is Antarctica located?
Southern hemisphere
5th largest and the southernmost continent
Southern ocean
What is the climate in Antarctica?
Cold desert
Average temperatures -60 degrees Celcius
Receives less than 200mm rainfall annually
What do the arrows in a food chain and food web represent?
Arrows show the flow of energy from one organism to another
Where is the Sahel located?
In the continent of Africa, south of the Sahara desert. Includes countries such as Mali, Chad, Burkina Faso.
Name one human feature of the Sahel
Most people in the Sahel have been semi-nomads, farming and raising livestock.
Name a physical feature of the Sahel
Abundant wildlife, e.g. gazelle, lion, giraffe, African wild dogs.
Climate is hot, sunny, dry and somewhat windy. Temperatures can reach 42 degrees Celsius.
Receives a low and unreliable amount of precipitation, between 250mm and 450mm annually. Droughts are frequent.
Reasons some animals in Africa are endangered
Poaching
Population growth
Demand for ivory
Poverty
Palm oil
Habitat loss
Why are bonobo monkeys endangered?
Bonobo monkeys are endangered due to low reproductive rates (not having many babies).
Habitat loss for agriculture and logging
Humans hunt bonobo monkeys to eat them
Name a fragile environment in Australia
Outback, Uluru, Great Barrier Reef, Daintree Tropical Rainforest
Why are African elephants endangered?
African elephants live in the savanna region and they are endangered because they are poached for their tusks, meat and skin.
What is flora?
Flora refers to vegetation.
What is fauna?
Fauna refers to wildlife.
Describe the location of the Outback
Outback regions extend from northern to southern Australian coastlines and include many climatic zones, including tropical and monsoon.
