Y10 CEW Flashcards
What is standard of living?
Is a measure of economic well-being, it can easily be measured by adding up the monetary value of our possessions and our jobs.
What is quality of life?
This is a composite measure of wellbeing, it includes economic, social, physical, political, and spiritual wellbeing.
Name 1 reason for high birth rates in stage 1 countries
Limited contraception/family planning.
High infant mortality rate, so people have more children to ensure they survive.
Children are a future source of income.
Some religions encourage large families.
Name 1 physical cause of uneven development
Landlocked countries are only bordered by land and depend on other countries cooperation to move goods through their country.
Extreme weather, such as cyclones, droughts and floods, most often hit tropical areas and are becoming more severe.
Name a consequence of uneven development
In Africa one child every minute dies from malaria, a life threatening disease carried by mosquitos.
What is life expectancy?
The total number of years a person can expect to live calculated at birth.
What is infant mortality rate?
The average number of deaths of children under 1 year of age per 1000 live births.
What is aid?
Aid is when a country or non-governmental organisation (NGO) such as Oxfam give resources to other countries to help them develop or to improve people’s lives.
What is large scale investment?
Many HIC and NEE countries choose to invest money and expertise in LICs to increase their profits.
Name 1 way large scale investment reduces uneven development
The development of infrastructure such as water pipes, roads and electricity supplies.
The construction of dams to provide electricity.
Improvement to harbours and ports.
The development of new industries.
Name 1 reason why death rates are low in stage 5 countries
Marriage is no longer a social ’norm’. A rise in the concept of childlessness.
Greater financial independence of women – do not need men to ‘take care’ of them.
An increase in non-traditional lifestyles, such as same-sex relationships.
Death rate may increase further as a result of lifestyle diseases e.g. low exercise and fatty, salt rich foods.
