A

Developed in 1940’s by Paul Lazarsfeld.

+ audiences are active
- more than two steps in flow of education

Q

What is reception theory?

A

Developed in 1960’s - suggests that the audience interprets meanings of a text depending on their culture/background/life experiences. (meaning of text is not fixed).
STUART HALL further developed idea in 1980’s (identified 3 positions reader may take)
- Dominant (fully shares text codes and accepts meaning)
- Negotiated (partially shares texts code and broadly accepts meaning)
- Oppositional (understand text but does not accept meaning)

Q

What is cultivation theory?

A

Developed by George Gerbner in 1960’s (combines hypodermic needle and active audience) - media does have important effects but not immediate.
This theory is used by Marxists
Suggests that there is a preferred reading which promotes particular interpretation of event.
Says those lacking direct experience are likely to accept preferred reading.
Those with direct experience are more likely to reject preferred reading.
However repetition of preferred reading over a period of time means that most people accept it and it becomes part of our culture.

What is Bandura’s bobo doll study?

A

Bandura showed children a video of adults hitting a bobo doll. The children were then left in a room with a bobo doll and they did the same thing.
This proves that seeing violence, increased violence in children. (agrees with hypodermic needle and two step flow)
