Xeriscape Flashcards
What is Xeriscape landscape?
A landscpe that minimizes added water and is drought tolerant.
What are the seven steps to a Xeriscape landscape?
- Planning and Design
- Soil Analysis
- Appropriate Plant Selection
- Practical Turf Areas
- Efficient Irrigation
- Use of Mulches
- Appropriate Maintenance
What are the three water-use zones and how do they differ?
Low would be plants that you don’t see much and can get a bit wilted as t hey naturally would to survive drought.
High are herbaceous perennials and color annuals requiring more water and maintenance. Medium is somewhere between the two.
Is drought tolerance the only criteria in plant selection for Xeriscape-type landscapes?
Plant selection is based on water use, functionality and sun requirements.
What is meant by practical turf area?
Practical turf areas are part of a landscape where turf is the most efficient and practical use. So areas that might receive higher traffic, or where kids can play etc.
What are some maintenance practices that minimize water-demanding new growth?
Mow the lawn higher as to not take off more than 1/3 of a blade of grass so it regrows more efficiently. Aeration, planting plants than can partially shade areas.
What are some plant survival tactics during drought or watering restrictions?
Consider saving the most difficult or costly to replace, Use Hydrogels and mulch to preserve water. Water in the evening or early morning.
