(X) topic 2 foreign policy Flashcards
why was henry so desperate for support from abroad
he was a usuper, he needs people backing him to appear more legitimate and secure his domestic position.
how did he go about gaining support from abroad
he tried to strenghten his crown with alliances and marriage treaties
making peace treaties with countries that could be a threat to him esp. france and scotland; wants a couple of trade deals to get him out of debt; good alliances that could protect him should he need it; no invasions please i beg
when was the failed invasion of france and what came of it
invasion launched in 1492 but france chose to pay them off with the treaty of etaples
gimme the date of the treaty of etaples
- november 1492 - france agreed to give no aid to english rebels (incl. pretenders) & pay england back for the effort theyd made with this cute little invasion
issues that could have presented themselves in regards to foreign policy
reliance on marriages; the auld alliance presents the threat of a 2 front war; the male heirs he had arent looking so reliable now, and once elizabeth of york dies, who knows if he can have many more
england and france have HISTORY
theyve been fighting the infamous 100 year war over the french crown and a couple of areas of land
scotland and france have HISTORY
theyve had the auld alliance going on since 1295, and if they decide to invade it would be a dangerous 2 front war
1497 big moment for england and scotland
treaty of ayton is signed - peace treaty between scotland and england.
how do we know the eng scot relationship defo still had its rocky moments
james vi gave perkin warbeck military support & he continued to expand his navy & keeps the auld alliance
lets appreciate the gravity of eng + scot getting together
when the treaty of ayton is signed, its the first peace treaty signed between the two since 1328 xD
what did the treaty of ayton achieve
peace treaty that made rules about boarders
who was the head of scotland before james
pro english earl of angus
the power couple of kingdoms that we now know as spain
ferdinand of aragon and isabella of castile got married in 1469, and won a civil war together in 1479
when does henry have a brilliant idea about building relations with spain
1488 henry propsed that arthur and catherine of aragon marry (mind theyre both infants at the time so its a bit premature) so henry officially has the recognition of a major european power eek
what changed in 1489 in regards to spain
signed the treaty of medine de campo; marriage to catherine of aragon & arthur agreed; restored trade relations with the commercial treaty
the marriage & some other bits and bobs are secured in the treaty of medina del campo
signed in march 1489. agreed on marriage of the two; catherine’s dowry was 40k; spain promises to not aid any english rebels; some trade agreements thrown in there for fun
trade agreements made in the treaty of medina del campo?
trade with burgundy would be free; philip would not impose any duties on the sale of english cloths; philip would not exlude english cloth from his lands
henrys chuffed with himself about the spanish treaty. a coin?
yes ofc a coin. he mints a new gold coin with himself wearing the imperial crown
theres a tad delay with the spanish treaty cos
spain isnt willing to send their lass over when england is a bit dangerous dealing with perkin warbeck, uprising etc. but other than that henry is thinking big. maybe he can marry joanna (catherines sister) to philip of burgundy so spain & burgundy are mates and england has an alliance with burgundy by association
isabella of castile dies in nov 1504 and divides everything causing
castilian succession crisis; end of anti french alliace; england no longer has a marriage alliance with spain anymore, just some kingdom thats a bit irrelevant sorry aragon
marriage decided in the treaty of medina del campo
catherine of aragon & arthur then henry. to secure spain and english alliance
marriage to bring spain and burgundy closer
joanna of castile and philip of burgundy
marriage that secured trade and alliance between burgundy and spain
maragret of savoy (sister of philip of burgundy) and archduke charles of burgundy (son of philip and joanna)
marriage that aided relationship between england and scotland
maraget (henry vii’s eldest daughter) and james iv (king of scotland) married in aug 1503.
dont know much but these trade agreements happened
norway denmark portugal
what comes of philip of burgundy’s fun time in england in 1506
henry grilled him until he agreed to sign the malus intercursus. trade with burgundy was now free; philip woulnd impose duties on english cloth
issues with trade in the baltic
henry tries to take away from privileges that the hanseatic league have but after a couple of decades theyre right back where they started: on top
what the hanseatic league
a group of german ports and cities that basically have a monopoly on baltic trade
