x linked traits Flashcards
How is the X chromsome different than the Y chromosome?
The X chromsome is much larger and carries many different genes than the smaller Y chromosome
what are X-linked traits?
~Some traits are controlled by genes on autosomes- chromosomes that do not affect the gender.
~ traits that are controlled by genes found on the X chromosome are called X- linked traits
~X- linked genes can have two different alles that follow a complete dominance pattern of inheritance
What are the steps to writing the genotypes for X-linked traits?
- Write sex chromsomes for the individual (female: XX, male: XY)
- add the appropriate superscript for the dominant or recessive allele to the “X”
go to notes for examples!
what are carriers?
A carrier is a genotype that is ALWAYS a hetrozygote and has a masked recessive allele.
How do the X-linked traits for males work?
~Males only have one X chromosome so they can only get one allele.
~the one single allele will always determine the phenotype.
~there will be NO MASKED RECESSIVE ALLELE.
