Q

What is divergent?

A

~ Common ancestor
~ Occurs when related species evolve to form different functional traits due to different selective pressures.
EX: beaks of Darwin’s finches
~ Evolve to become more different over time.
~Species evolve to form homologous structure
EX: species with forelimb skeletal arrangement (SIMILAR structure, DIFFERENT function).

Q

What is convergent evolution?

A

~ ancestor one, ancestor two.
~occurs when unrelated species (no common ancestor) evolve to form similar traits due to similar selective pressures.
~evolve to become more similar over time.
~species form analogous structures
EX: wings in birds, bats, insects, etc.
