Complex patterns of inheritance Flashcards
what is incomplete dominance?
Describles a condition in which neither allele for a gene completely concedes the presence of the other; it results in the intermediate expression of a trait.
~ A heterozygote exhibits a phenotype that is between the dominant and recessive phenotype.
(example in notebook)
ie. when the 2 parents fertilize the F1 gen will have blended offspring.
What will happen if the F1 generation is to self-fertilize?
If the F1 generation plants are to self-fertilize, the F2 generation will include off-spring with all 3 phenotypes.
What is Codominance?
The condition in which both alleles for a trait are equally expressed in heterozygotes; both alleles are dominant/ neither is dominant to the other.
~ A heterozygote in which both the base color and white are fully expressed.
(look at notebook for example)
ie. both alleles will be visible, base is white, 2nd is red, will be white and red spots.
what is an advantage of codominance?
have survival benefit for individuals who inherit different alleles for the same trait.
(if the trait is a disease)
multiple alleles?
a gene with more than two alleles, but the traits are still based on 2 of the possible alleles.
