What happens in the Philippines?
Japan invades US military bases there and US abandones them
What was the Bataan Death March?
POW’s from the abandoned Philippines were marched in horrible conditions to Japan’s death camps
- no food/water/rest, disease, forced to work, many died
What was the Battle of Coral Sea?
Japan tried to invade Australia, but we beat them back
- Fought completely in the air
What was the Battle of Midway?
Japan tried to attack Midway Island, a US island with bases there. But the US intercepts their plans and ambush them, destroying MANY ships, planes, and resources
What was the Guadalcanal Campaign?
US takes Guadalcanal Island to get closer to Japan
What is island hopping?
Avoiding larger islands and taking smaller, less defended ones
What was the Leyte Gulf Battle?
US took Leyte Island (island in Philippines)
What was the Iwo Jima Battle?
US took Iwo Jima (island near Japan)
What was the Okinawa Battle?
US took Okinawa (island nearer Japan), int he bloodiest battle in the Pacific
What was the firebombing of Tokyo?
US dropped firebombs on Tokyo to try to make Japan surrender - they didn’t
What was the Potsdam Conference?
Allied conference where they discussed future of Europe, told Japan “surrender or die”
What were the atomic bombs?
Two atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki by the US to end the war
What was VJ Day?
The day Japan officially surrendered (treated with peace and tolerence)
