How did the US go from neutral to being a part of WWII?
What happened at the Washington Naval Conference? (2 answers)
- All countries must decrease navy size
- All countries must respect other’s territory
What did the Kellogg-Briand Pact say?
Countries must use diplomacy instead of going straight to war
What was the Dawes Plan?
- US paid big loans to Germany
- Germany paid reparations to the Allies
- Allies paid back debt from the war to US
What was the Young Plan?
Germany’s reparations were reduced because they were struggling and throwing everything off
Why were tarrifs raised after WWI? What were the consequences of this?
- Tariffs raised to encourage people to buy products from their country
- Consequences: international trade falls apart, depression worsens
What did the Nye Commission find out?
It found out that the US got involved in WWI for money (we made large loans to Britain that we’d only get back if we won)
Why were the Neutrality Acts passed?
To try to keep US out of war (result of Nye Commission’s findings)
What did the Neutrality Acts say? (3 answers)
- Don’t sell to countries currently/previously involved in major wars (embargo)
- No loans to these countries
- No travelling to or on ships owned by these countries
What was the America First Comittee?
A group of notable people who came together to influence which policies would be passed (like a lobbyist group)
What is the Cash and Carry Policy? Who was it biased toward, and why?
- US can sell non-military goods to any country as long as they pay in cash and pick it up themselves
- Biased toward Britain since they had easy access to the US
How did Germany attack France? Why is this extra significant for the Allies?
- They took 3 attack paths at the same time
- Now Britain is the only Allied power left
What was the Battle of Britian/The Blitz? How is it fought?
- Germany tries to attack Britain but Britain pushes them back
- Entire battle is fought in the air
What does Destroyers for Bases do?
US gives Britain 50 destroyers for some territories in return
What is the selective Service Act?
First peacetime draft (US wasn’t officially part of WWII)
Where does the phrase “Arsenal for Democracy” come from, and what does it mean?
- It is FDR’s campaign slogan during the Election of 1940
- It means that the US will support democratic countries
