Explain: blitzkrieg, the Battle of Britain, the Blitz
Germany invaded Poland on 1 September 1939 using a new method of fighting called Blitzkrieg. The Polish army was beaten in about a week. Blitzkrieg involved fast-moving columns of tanks supported by soldiers and dive-bomber attacks. Parachutists were dropped behind enemy lines the night before to destroy enemy strongholds and cut their telephone wires.
Why did Japan enter the war?
At the end of 1941, Japan entered the war. When they launched a surprise attack in Pearl Harbour against America, the USA declared war on Japan and its allies (Italy and Germany).
What was D-Day?
On 6th June 1944, British , American and other Allied troops landed in France and forced the Germans back. Also in July Hitler’s opponents in Germany tried to assassinate him and Germany failed to retake the land they lost in December.
