Propaganda
Men felt it was their duty and they needed to serve their country
They wanted to impress more women if they came back from war
Men would be looked down upon as cowards if they didn’t join

What were the pals battalions?
A
The British government thought that fighting alongside friends and neighbours rather than strangers would encourage people to join up - and they were right. Rival towns competed with each other to prove how patriotic they were and formed ‘pals battalions’

A
They were convinced by posters that promised ‘easy life, good pay and very little danger’
