Dictatorships Flashcards
Who was Karl Marx?
Marx believed that one day, ordinary workers would rise up and get rid of the rich people because they were so unhappy. Then, he said, there would be no different classes - no very rich and no very poor. Money and goods would be shared out equally. There would be no need for money or laws since everyone would live a simple life, sharing all they had with each other. It started in 1917.
Describe communism
Only the Communist Party could exist
All media was controlled by the state
No open religious beliefs - only the communist way of life was to be worshipped
All work, housing, healthcare, and education was controlled by the communists.
The state owned everything and provided for everyone
Who was Il Duce?
Benito Mussolini
Means ‘the leader’
He formed the Fascist Party in 1919
What is fascism?
Controlled every aspect of someone’s life
Education, newspapers, films, radio and even sport all carried the same message: the needs of one person aren’t important; it’s what Italy needs that counts.
People could run their own businesses but there were tight controls on the workers
In return, the Fascist party would ‘look after’ Italy and build roads and railways, which gave people jobs.
What is the difference between fascism and communism?
Fascists don’t believe in equality. They believe men are superior to women and some races are superior to others.
