- isolate spermatic cord from fascia
- hemostasis for testicular artery & vein
- transect testicle
- maintain ventral drainage or close the incision
how does a newberry knife work for castrating animals?
creates a cranial & caudal skin flap in the scrotum - still need to ligate cords or apply emasculator
when is castration performed in calves?
males < 500lb - improves aggression
what is the influence of castration of calves?
intact males - higher daily rate of weight gain & produces a leaner carcass
castrated males - increased fat content in carcass & more flavorful beef
what is the toxic dose of lidocaine for calves?
6mg/kg

no
