Wrist Joint Flashcards
Radiohumeral Joint:
What is the Open packed Position? Closed Packed Position? Capsular Pattern?
Open Packed Position: neutral with slight ulnar deviation
Closed Packed Position: extension and radial deviation
Capsular Pattern: flexion and extension that is equally limited
What muscles assist in wrist flexion?
flexor carpi ulnaris
flexor carpi radials
palmaris longus
What muscles assist in wrist extension?
extensor carpi radialis brevis and longus
extensor carpi ulnaris
What muscles assist in wrist radial deviation
Extensor carpi radialis brevis and longus
Flexor carpi radialis
Extensor Pollicus Longus
Extensor Pollicus Brevis
What muscles assist in ulnar deviation?
Extensor carpi ulnaris
Flexor carpi radialis
What is the anatomical snuffbox?
This is a depression that is found on the dorsal surface of the wrist at the distal aspect of the radius
Bordered by tendons of the:
- Abductor Pollicus Longus
- Extensor Pollicus Brevis
- Extensor Pollicus Longus
Used for palpation of the scaphoid especially when there is concern for fracture
What is the carpal tunnel?
The carpal tunnel is located deep to the flexor retinaculum
median nerve enters the palm through the carpal tunnel.
Conditions that reduce the size of the carpal tunnel such as: [Tenosynovitis or inflammation of the flexor retinaculum] can lead to compression of the median nerve > Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS)
What is the Dorsal Radiocarpal Ligament?
the dorsal radiocarpal ligament is the only major ligament that is located on the dorsal surface of the wrist.
originates from the posterior surface of the distal radius and the styloid process of the radius > lunate and triquetrum.
Serves to limit wrist flexion
What is the Extensor Retinaculum?
This is a ligamentous structure that crosses the dorsal aspect of the wrist
used to cover the tendons of the extensor musculature.
prevents bowstringing of the tendons as the wrist is extended.
What is the Flexor Retinaculum?
AKA the Transverse Carpal Ligament
Ligamentous structure crossing the palmar aspect of the wrist
forms the most [anterior aspect] of the carpal tunnel
prevents the bowstringing of the of the tendons of the flexor musculature with wrist flexion.
serves as an attachment site of the thenar and hypothenar ligaments.
What is the interosseus membrane?
Dense bands of fibrous connective tissues running in an oblique fashion connecting the radius and the ulna.
Used to stabilize against axial forces applied to the wrist.
What is the palmar radiocarpal ligament?
Ligament that maintains the alignment of its associated joints and is used to limit hyperextension of the wrist.
What motions does the palmar radiocarpal ligament limit?
Hyperextension of the wrist.
What is the origination and insertion of the palmar radiocarpal ligament limit?
Origin: anterior surface of the distal radius
Insertion: Capitate, triquetrum, scaphoid.
What is the radial collateral ligament and what does it serve to limit?
Serves to limit ulnar deviation.
Becomes taut when the wrist is in the extremes of flexion and extension.
