Elbow Joint Flashcards
Radiohumeral Joint:
What is the Open packed Position? Closed Packed Position? Capsular Pattern?
Open Packed Position: Full Extension and Supination
Closed Packed Position: 90 degrees flexion, 5 degrees supination
Capsular Pattern: Flexion > Extension > Supination > Pronation
Ulnohumeral Joint:
What is the Open packed Position? Closed Packed Position? Capsular Pattern?
Open Packed Position: 70 degrees elbow flexion, 10 degrees supination
Closed Packed Position: full extension
Capsular Pattern: flexion > extension
Proximal Radioulnar Joint:
What is the Open packed Position? Closed Packed Position? Capsular Pattern?
Open Packed Position: 70 degrees elbow flexion, 35 degrees supination
Closed Packed Position: 5 degrees supination
Capsular Pattern: supination > pronation
What muscles produce elbow flexion?
Bicep Brachii
Brachialis
Brachioradialis
What muscles produce elbow extension?
Triceps Brachii
Anconeus
What muscles produce forearm supination?
biceps brachii
supinator
what muscles produce forearm pronation?
pronator teres
pronator quadratus
What is the annular ligament?
- Band of ligaments surrounding the head of the radius
- allows for rotation of the radius at the radial notch of the ulna.
what is the anterior ligament?
This ligament stretches from the radial collateral ligament (RCL)n attaching the the upper portion of the coronoid fossa.
(just below the coronoid process)
What is the cubital fossa?
What are its borders?
What are its contents?
This is a triangular space that is on the anterior aspect of the elbow?
BORDERS:
Brachioradialis/Pronator Teres/ad an imaginary line passing through the lateral and medial epicondyles of the humerus.
Contains several structures:
Tendon of the biceps brachii
median nerve
radial nerve
brachial artery
median cubital vein
What is the cubital tunnel?
This is a space that is formed by the:
ulnar collateral ligament
flexor carpi ulnaris
medial head of the triceps
medial epicondyle
- ulnar nerve runs through the cubital tunnel?
- Cubital tunnel becomes the smallest with elbow flexion.
What is the olecranon bursa?
Bursa laying posterior to the olecranon process.
considered to be the main bursa of the elbow
most commonly involved in inflammation due to direct trauma to the elbow.
What is the posterior ligament?
the posterior ligament resembles the anterior ligament.
This blends into the collateral ligaments and is attached to the upper portion of the olecranon fossa and is below the olecranon process.
What is the radial collateral ligament? (Lateral Collateral Ligament) LCL?
Extends from the lateral epicondyle of the humerus to the lateral border of the olecranon process of the ulna and to the annular ligament
Lateral Epicondyle > lateral border of the olecranon and annular ligament.
- Helps in preventing adduction of the elbow joint
- Reinforces the radiohumeral joint
What is the ulnar collateral ligament? (Medial Collateral Ligament) MCL?
the ulnar collateral ligament runs from:
medial epicondyle of the humerus > proximal portion of the ulna.
