Hip Joint Flashcards
Iliofemoral Joint Joint:
What is the Open packed Position? Closed Packed Position? Capsular Pattern?
Open Packed Position: 30 degrees flexion, 30 degrees abduction, slight external rotation
Closed Packed Position: full extension, internal rotation
Capsular Pattern: flexion > abduction > internal rotation (according to score builders)
(Sometime IR is most limited)
CP: internal rotation > flexion > abduction = extension > all other motions
What is the orientation of the acetabulum?
Laterally
Inferiorly
Anteriorly
Which muscles produce hip flexion?
iliopsoas
sartorius
rectus femoris
pectineus
Which muscles produce hip extension?
Gluteus Maximus
Gluteus Medius
Semitendinosus
Semimembranosus
Biceps Femoris
Which muscles produce hip abduction?
Gluteus Medius
Gluteus Minimus
Piriformis
Obturator Externus
Tensor Fasciae Latae
Which muscles produce hip adduction
Adductor Magnus
Adductor Longus
Adductor Brevis
Gracilis
Which muscles produce hip internal rotation?
TFL
Gluteus Medius
Gluteus Minimus
Pectineus
Adductor Longus
Which muscles produce hip external rotation?
Gluteus Maximus
Piriformis
Sartorius
Obturator Internus
Obturator Externus
Superior and Inferior Gamellus
(Quadratus Femoris)

What is the acetabular labrum?
A fibrocartilaginous rim attached to the margin of the acetabulum?
Enhances the depth of the acetabulum.
Articular Capsule?
Extends from the rim of the acetabulum to the neck of the femur.
Capsule is reinforced by the: Iliofemoral. Pubofemoral, Ischiofemoral ligaments
What are the bursae of the hip?
Iliopsoas Bursae: located between the anterior joint capsule and the iliopsoas tendon.
Trochanteric Bursae: (there are several of them)
- located between the greater trochanter and several gluteal muscles
Ischiogluteal Bursae: located between the ischium and the gluteus maximus
What is the femoral triangle and its borders?
Space that is located on the anterior hip
BORDERS:
Adductor Longus
Sartorius
Inguinal Ligament
What structures are found in/pass through the femoral triangle?
Femoral Artery
Lymph Gland/Nodes
Femoral Nerve
Femoral Vein
What is the attachment sites of Ischiofemoral ligament?
Ischial wall of the acetabulum
to
Neck of the Femur
What is the Ischiofemoral ligament and its functions?
[Weakest of the three ligaments]
- Role in reinforcing the articular capsule
What is the attachment sites of the iliofemoral ligament?
Anterior Inferior Iliac Spine (AIIS)
to
Intertrochanteric Line of the femur
What is the Iliofemoral ligament and its functions?
Considered to be the strongest ligament of the body.
Prevents hip excessive hip extension and assists in maintaining posture.
“Y ligament of Bigelow” - “Resting on your Y’s”
What is the Ligamentum Teres?
[ligament of the head of the femur]
- serves as a physical attachment between the head of the femur and the inferior rim of the acetabulum
- Can fine the blood vessels and nerves that travel in a sheath to the head of the femur.
- provides minimal stability to the hip
What is the pubofemoral ligament and its functions?
Prevents excessive abduction of the femur
Limits hip extension
What is the attachment sites of the pubofemoral ligament?
Extends from the pubic portion of the rim of the acetabulum
to
neck of the femur
