ALLENS
Pt seated
Pt makes a fist
Examiner places contact over radial and ulnar arteries
Pt continuously opens and contracts fist until palm is white
Release radial artery while still holding ulnar artery
Repeat with ulnar artery
ALLENS - WHAT DOES IT TEST?
Artery stenosis
Occlusion
ALLENS - POSITIVE TEST
Skin remains blanched (white) for longer than 5 seconds

Pt seated
Pt grips their thumb with their fingers in a fist
Pt ulnar deviates hand (moves it down to the floor)
FINKLESTEIN’S - WHAT DOES IT TEST?
Tenosynovitis of abductor policies longs and extensor pollicis brevis
FINKLESTEIN’S - POSITIVE TEST
Pain on lateral wrist (around the abductor pollicis longs and extensor pollicis brevis)
PHALEN’S
Pt seated
Pt places dorsal side of hands together (backs of hands) (looks like they are praying)
Hold for 2 mins
If pain is felt during, no need to continue for full 2 mins

Carpal tunnel syndrome

Pain
Numbness
Tingling distal to compression
REVERSE PHALEN’S
Pt seated
Pt places palmar side of hands together (like they are praying)
Hold for 2 mins
If pain is felt during no need to continue

Pt seated with arm pronated
Place thumb over the ulnar (just over styloid process)
Index finger on pisiform
Produce ‘clicking motion’
