Elbow flexion
Agonist: Biceps
Antagonist: Triceps
Active: ‘In anatomical position bring palms to shoulders’
Passive: Hold at elbow and wrist and bring hand towards shoulder
Resisted: Resist behind elbow and around forearm pull against client pulling hand to their shoulder
Elbow extension
Agonist: Triceps
Antagonist: Biceps
Active: ‘Straighten arms back out to straight from shoulders’
Passive: Hold behind elbow and wrist and bring hand away from shoulder to straight
Resisted: Resist below elbow and behind wrist and push against the client whilst they push towards the bed
Wrist extension
Agonist: Flexor carpi radialis
Antagonist: Flexor carpi ulnaris
Active: ‘With palms facing the bed, lift fingers to the ceiling’
Passive: With palms facing the bed, hold at wrist and hand to lift fingers to the ceiling (palm and fingers)
Resisted: With palms facing the bed, hold at wrist and resist hand to lift fingers to the ceiling
Wrist flexion
Agonist: Flexor carpi ulnaris
Antagonist: Flexor carpi radialis
Active: ‘With palms facing the ceiling, bring fingers towards ceiling’
Passive: With palms facing the ceiling, hold at wrist and hand to lift fingers to the ceiling
Resisted: With palms facing the ceiling, hold at wrist and resist hand to lift fingers to the bed
Elbow pronation
Agonist: Pronator teres
Antagonist: Supinator
Active: ‘Client needs their hands on the side with thumbs facing up and move hand so their palms face the ceiling’
Passive: Client needs their hands on the side with thumbs facing up, I move their hand so their palm faces the ceiling
Resisted: I hold the clients hand, they apply force to get their palm to face the ceiling and I resist them
Elbow supination
Agonist: Supinator
Antagonist: Pronator teres
Active: ‘Client needs their hands on the side with thumbs facing up and move hand so their palms face the bed’
Passive: Client needs their hands on the side with thumbs facing up, I move the hand so the palm faces the bed
Resisted: I hold the clients hand, they apply force to get their palm to face the bed and I resist them
Ulna deviation
Agonist: Flexor carpi ulnaris
Antagonist: Extensor carpi radialis longus
Active: ‘Palms facing the sky, I ask them to move their fingers away from each other’
Passive: I hold at the palm and wrist and move the hand away from the midline of their body
Resisted: I hold their wrist on the outside and get the client to move their hand away from their midline by pushing their hand into my forearm
Radial deviation
Agonist: Extensor carpi radialis
Antagonist: Flexor carpi ulnaris
Active: ‘Palms facing the sky, I ask them to move their fingers towards each other
Passive: I hold at the palm and wrist and move the hand towards the midline of their body
Resisted: I hold their wrist on the inside and get the client to move their hand towards their midline by pushing their hand into my forearm
Finger flexion
Agonist: Extensor digitorum communis
Antagonist: Extensor muscles
Active: ‘With hands flat out and palms facing up, squeeze hand into a fist’
Passive: Push hand into a fist
Resisted: Push each finger down with their palms facing upwards, the client applies opposing force
Finger extension
Agonist: Extensor muscles
Antagonist: Extensor digitorum communis
Active: ‘With hands in a fist, open hands to stretch fingers so palms face up’
Passive: Open hand from a fist to straight fingers
Resisted: Push each finger down with their palms facing the bed, the client applies opposing force
Thumb flexion
Agonist: Flexor pollicis longus
Antagonist: Extensor pollicis longus
Active: ‘With the clients hand
on its side, thumb facing up, bring the thumb towards the bed’
Passive: With the clients hand
on its side, thumb facing up, I move the thumb towards the bed
Resisted: With the clients hand on its side, thumb facing up, client pushes their thumb down while I resist them
Thumb extension
Agonist: Extensor pollicis longus
Antagonist: Flexor pollicis longus
Active: ‘With the clients hand
on its side, thumb facing up, bring the thumb upwards away from the bed’
Passive: With the clients hand
on its side, thumb facing up, I move the thumb upwards away from the bed
Resisted: With the clients hand on its side, thumb facing up, client pushes their thumb up while I resist them
